Overview

Brisbane's world-class Suncorp Stadium has been outfitted with approximately 90 MicroChill Coldroom and Freezer Controllers.

The Innotech MicroChill controllers were installed by Sunstate Refrigeration, specialists in installation, service and maintenance of commercial coldrooms and freezers.

Challenge

The recent major refurbishment of this historical sporting facility included the installation of a large number of medium temperature rooms (coldrooms) and low temperature rooms (freezers), to enable food and beverage outlets to cater to a capacity of approximately 52,500 Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer spectators.

The Stadium required the installation of controllers that are reliable and user-friendly. Access to local technical support was very important, as was the need for the controllers to be capable of working as stand-alone units.

Site Logistics and Timing

The complex spans a massive 7.42 hectares - the stadium alone covering an area of 82,000 square metres. Due to the 52,500-capacity seating surrounding all four sides of the stadium, the food and beverage outlets are strategically placed over a large area.

Installation of the MicroChill controllers took place progressively. As each section of the stadium became accessible to Sunstate Refrigeration, the coldrooms and freezers were installed, as were the controllers.

Due to this sporadic timetable, it was sometimes necessary for the Innotech controllers to be supplied on short notice.

Solution

The MicroChill controller was chosen as the solution to Suncorp Stadium's needs for a number of reasons, including:-

• The product is quick to install, and easy to use and maintain.
• Suited to both coldroom and freezer applications, MicroChill eliminates the need for two separate products.
• MicroChill is designed and manufactured locally, ensuring reliable supply and support of the product.

Each coldroom and freezer is equipped with its own stand-alone controller. Each unit has been housed in an enclosure, specially designed by Sunstate Refrigeration. The enclosure integrates the MicroChill controller with an on/off switch, person entrapment light, high temperature light, and defrost indication light.

The MicroChill units enable control and monitoring of temperature, control of room lighting, setpoint adjustment, manual defrost control and data logging of temperatures and alarms.

Additional applications include temperature alarms with delays, time and temperature termination of defrosts and a service mode with timed automatic restart. This function allows the rooms to be disabled, when loading and unloading of food and beverage stock is required.

Summary

Allan Gutteridge of Sunstate Refrigeration stated that he was impressed with just how quick and easy the MicroChill is to install, program and use. Mr Gutteridge is also a keen supporter of Australian-made products, so the fact that MicroChill is manufactured and supported locally was also a significant factor in deciding to use the MicroChill for this project.
